Review of Serenity (2005) by Danny S — 12 May 2012
One of the finest sci-fi action romps I have ever seen!
There are echoes of the Millennium Falcon in the ship itself and a passing resemblance to Han Solo in the lead character. However, these two points are stated more as an observation than a criticism. This film is classy, character driven, witty, action-packed and visually impressive.
Joss Whedon wrote and directed this, his first feature film in the helm, and is a continuation of his short lived, though critically acclaimed TV series Firefly. Whilst there is no requirement to have seen the prior TV series, having done so will help you understand the characters a little better. The first 15 minutes will bring anyone who is new to this world slap-bang up-to-date.
Fans of the original series haven't been ignored either; the film does a good job of tying up loose ends from the TV series and remains faithful to the characters and universe created.
Nathan Fillion is a charismatic and compelling lead actor who has taken something of the swashbuckling swagger of Han Solo and the cocky inventiveness of Indiana Jones and blended in his own unique essence to create an original character that has depth and compassion.
The script is electrifying, the action sequences bone-crunching and the main enemy nothing short of chilling!
If you have come to this film without having seen the original TV series, I guarantee you will be looking out for the box set. I have now joined the ranks of fellow fans who wait with baited breath to see if Joss Whedon's recent success means that he will be able to make a sequel to what is, in my humble opinion, one of the finest sci-fi films ever made!
