Review of Serenity (2005) by James-Masaki R — 16 Jul 2012
I don't know why it took me so many years to finish watching "Firefly" as the DVD was collecting dust on my shelf. But once I started again, it was hard to stop. Such a great concept for a series, like "Cowboy Bebop", "Star Wars", and Boetticher or Leone westerns rolled into one, it was bound to be a network flop.
And with a flop TV show, a full length movie should never have happened. But "Serenity" did, and is one of the most satisfying TV show to feature film continuations I've seen. It's not like "Star Trek" where the movies had infinitely better effects, Or "Ducktales The Movie" where the movie seemed like a smaller and worse scale than the TV series.
Instead, "Serenity" hits right. It's not on a grand scale, yet it's bigger than what could've been shown on TV. For fans, it'll make them cry because of the inevitable death(s?) of some major characters, and Whedon said it perfectly (might not be the exact quote): "I don't want to make things that people like, I want to make things that people love".
