Review of Serenity (2005) by Joey S — 06 Oct 2012
It's doesn't necessarily live up to the legendary TV show, but Serenity is nonetheless a great movie, and one that provides a sense of closure to the abruptly-cancelled Firefly. All the acting is consistent with the show, and in some cases even better than in the show.
Nathan Fillion, Sean Maher, and Summer Glau all give even better performances than they did in Firefly, and that's saying something. The movie is more action-packed than Firefly, and all the fight scenes are thrilling and, in the case of River's fights, astoundingly well-choreographed.
The movie does have a good sense of humor, but, similar to Firefly, the movie is for the most part relatively serious. It had to pack a lot of elements into it, so it doesn't have time to acknowledge every loose end from Firefly, but that is just one of the consequences of cancelling the show so soon.
It may not be the ideal end to Firefly, but it's the closest to a finale as we will get, and aside from that Serenity is a great sci-fi movie and a refreshing return to the characters and stories of Firefly.
