Review of Serendipity (2001) by Zoran S — 06 Mar 2010
This is fascinatingly ridiculous. Itâ??s sort of an idiotic cousin to Luis Bunuelâ??s â??That Obscure of Desireâ?? where coupling and love is continually frustrated by the whims of chance and fate.
Of course, this film plays everything straight and asks us to accept the two leadsâ?? behavior unironically. On some level, its philosophical conceits about destiny and the universe negate the plot demands of the Romantic comedy leaving only formalism.
Recognizable human behavior doesnâ??t advance the story as with most Hollywood conventionsâ??indeed, there is no psychology to foundâ?? only narrative determinism does.
