Review of Seraphim Falls (2007) by Douglas A — 08 Sep 2007
A little contrived and somewhat obvious (to some not all some reviewers are apparently idiots) with its religious implications, however this is a fine solid western with two accomplished actors excelling in their roles; Pierce Brosnan who could suffer from a Bond Complex is reassuringly gruff and pudgier than usual and Liam Neeson is his usual excellent self.
The opening is superb and somewhat brave and though the direction is a little amateurish it is straightforward and gets the job done. The main thing is that you must pay attention to not only the leads but what is said, who they meet (especially to the sublime Angelica Houston at the end) and the title itself.
I keep telling myself I do not like the Western and yet I like a damn lot of them and the recent entries such as The Proposition, Open Range and now this Seraphim Falls have yet to really disappoint me and I am looking forward to both the remake of 3.
10 to Yuma (despite the fact it?s Glen Ford?s best film and the original is a bona-fide 5 star classic) and even The Assassination of Jesse James?looks intriguing.
