Review of Seraphim Falls (2007) by Phil A — 16 Oct 2007
Existential yet harrowing Western is fuelled by Pierce Brosnan's animalistic performance. He's almost unrecognizable as a Ramboesque fugitive Union captain being chased by bloodthirsty Liam Neeson and a posse of hired guns.
Brosnan has nothing more than a Bowie knife and his limitless ingenuity. The first couple of acts are like First Blood meets 3:10 To Yuma, then the tale becomes more poignant and allegorical as the locales change from snowbound mountains to scorching desert plains.
Some great kills and one insanely genius scene involving a dead horse. Angelica Huston's character should have been taken out during script revisions, but the ending is still great in spite of her presence.
Story challenges your perceptions of good and evil when you aren't drooling over John Toll's location photography.
