Review of Seraphim Falls (2007) by Roberto A — 12 Apr 2008
A ham-handed attempt at a Revisionist Western, "Seraphim Falls" is just too silly and takes itself too seriously to do its existentialist themes justice. A goofy and improbable chase scene through the mountains leads to a series of poorly realized vignettes that are pretty lukewarm compared to other films in this genre.
By the time we get to the heavy philosophizing in the desert (the only really effective scenes in the film), you just don't care anymore what the hell Colonel Carver and Gideon are up to. An absolutely awful score telegraphs the emotion of each scene; the film would have been greatly improved if they killed the music.
Through it all, old industry pros Neeson and Brosnan earn their paycheck, their talent way out of the league of the third rate actors surrounding them. But their professionalism can't help the deadly dull script and bad editing.
A disappointing debut by promising director David Von Ancken.
