Review of September (1987) by Logan M — 17 Jan 2015
What some people will do for love...or the lack of it...
A group of neighbors and friends head to their summer house in Vermont where they enjoy each other's company and hope to relax; however, this summer will be different for some than others. A struggling book writer falls in love with his wife's friend. His wife is a bit eccentric and struggling to deal with her ways. The friend's husband starts falling for a married woman in the house, who has kids, which will complicate matters. How will this all work out?
"We don't need another book on survival. We already have the boy scout manual.".
Woody Allen, director of Manhattan, Midnight in Paris, Alice, Shadows and Fog, Radio Days, Bananas, Small Time Crooks, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Zelig, and Annie Hall, delivers September. The storyline for this picture is entertaining and interesting. This is a fairly solid character piece with unique dynamics. The acting is better than average and the cast includes Mia Farrow, Dianne Wiest, Denholm Elliott, Sam Waterston, and Jack Warden.
"The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.".
This is another Netflix Allen gem I found and gave a viewing. I loved the interaction between characters and the battles Farrow faced within herself while all the chaos was breaking out around her. Overall, this is a well done film by Allen that displays his great writing, character development, and ability to deliver a big picture plot with intricate subplots. I do recommend seeing this.
"You just make my head spin.".
Grade: B.
