Review of Senna (2010) by Mikey M — 06 Sep 2011
Beautiful and emotionally draining doc about one of the greatest racing drivers of all time. It carves a consuming visual narrative entirely from stock footage, aided by a befitting score, sound-bites and audio interviews. While a substantial insight into the man himself is included, it never feels too clingy or manipulative because of the decision to use stock footage. It was nice to be reminded of the terrific rivalry and controversy surrounding Senna and Prost in their prime, but this film offers up something that transcends sport, rivalry and desire. What really impressed me most about this film was how the filmmaker carefully mapped the inevitable deep sense of foreboding with deft editorial decisions and thereby channeling the story into a structure that drew out so many of my deepest and most powerful intrinsic emotions.
Senna is a stunning film that should not be missed.
