Review of Senna (2010) by Russ O — 10 Oct 2011
This is a great documentary about a great man and you don't have to be a fan of motor racing to enjoy this.
Senna is undoubtedly a legend and the story of his rise to the top of Formula One is suitably fitting. An unwavering belief in his talent and a total fearlessness when racing might come off as arrogance but the man himself was likeable and grounded. His great rivalry with Alain Prost plays out culminating in the Japanese Grand Prix of 1989 and 1990 before his move to Williams.
It's gripping stuff all the way through, with tension and jubilation, plus a villain in the form of Prost... and then the 1994 season begins. You know how this story will end when you start but it's not until the San Marino qualifying begins that you begin to realise what is about to happen.
Asif Kapadia has delivered a very, very good film and one that celebrates Senna with fawning over him.
