Review of Senna (2010) by Tanner A — 05 Jan 2012
Firstly you don't have to be a formula 1 fan to get this documentary or like it. It's not only one of the best documentarys of the year its one of the best films period. The film charts the late great Aryton Senna's career from go kart driver to Formula 1 to his death in 1994.
One thing that will strike you about this film is despite it being a documentary it has what seems like a clear hero (Senna) and a villian (in fact 2 in the shady Alain Prost and his seemingly corrupt countryman and formula 1 figurehead Jean Marie Balestre).
If it's this documentary's one flaw is it's maybe too pro Senna in that aspect as it does make Prost and Belestre look horrible maybe if they actually aren't, and not being a massive formula 1 fan I don't know.
The rise of Senna from promising driver to eventual Formula 1 camp is an interesting one and one certainly it's easy to get behind when you consider just how he was loved by his Brazilian countrymen and women.
Senna is easy to support despite his smugness and richness, he essentially wants to race to find out who's the better man rather than politic and his drive to get better safety issues in the sport is admirable.
His death at the end is hard not to blub at considering the circumstances and indeed the other accidents that fateful weekend. As a man film it's essential viewing, but then it's essential viewing for everyone.
