The film-makers manage to capture the essence of not only Ayrton Senna himself, but of the sport, and of the era. A fascinating person, immediately arresting, his almost childlike enthusiasm for racing is at once noticeable in the film.

An innocence which manifested in a passion for success and truth in a sport whose authorities seem to prefer automatons. Using archive film exclusively, with the kind of behind the scenes footage that is quite astonishing, 'Senna' is as thrilling as it is moving, as intimate as it is insightful.

It is not a retrospective, the viewer is drawn in and taken with it, as his life and career unfold. Inspirational is frankly a horrifically overused term now, people attach it to whoever has more than 10 million followers on Twitter, or people who don't quite make the final of X-Factor.

Ayrton Senna is a folk hero, an exceptional talent, and his legacy and reputation live on. The finest Formula 1 driver in history. Some may say, and with justification, that the sport did not deserve him.
