Review of Semi-Pro (2008) by Orlando D — 03 Jan 2013
It's hard to get excited with this film, it's Will Ferrell in another sports movie that's uninspired. Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, an obnoxious manchild(typecasted)who was a one-hit wonder who uses his proceedings to buy the Flint Tropical basketball team, who is the worst of their league.
He hires a former NBA player(Woody Harrelson)to turn his fortunes around. This movie feels dated not because of it's 70's settings, because we have seen one too many 70's spoofs and sports movies that are way better than this.
The supporting players are stranded here and Harrelson is given a uninteresting romance with Maura Tierney. What comes down to it, this is a paycheck film for Ferrell and the studio believing that box-office magic can strike again for him as Blades of Glory and Telladega Nights did, thankfully this was not the case here as it rightfully tanked and brought his sports spoofs to a screeching halt.
