Review of Semi-Pro (2008) by Ed K — 20 Jul 2009
For every hot comedian/actor that bursts onto the scene, becomes the 'it' man who everyone wants, and then fades in a slow decline, basking in the former glow of his once shining career, one looks back at where that decline began.
I think for Will Ferrell's career, Semi-Pro was the start of that decline. Chronicling the exploits of a fictional 70's bush league pro basketball team, The Flint Tropics (GO MICHIGAN!), Ferrell stars as the delusional team owner/captain/coach Jackie Moon. I can list more things that this movie lacks than actually possesses; jokes, cast chemistry, good script writing, etc.
I'm thankful this film was only 90 min long because by the conclusion, I'm still not sure what the point of the movie was. It sure wasn't meant to entertain.
