Review of Selma (2014) by Pat M — 14 Feb 2015
A powerful film about one of the most remarkable men of modern times, and the historic events in Selma that helped bring about the Voting Rights Act in the US. I was genuinely surprised to learn that King was only 39 when he was assassinated.
I had always imagined he was older. To think, that at the time of Selma he was only 36 years of age. What a truly astounding individual! Of the film itself, David Oyelowo is magnificent as King, though I found the film perhaps a little too considered in its delivery and pacing to the detriment of the drama and chaos of the time (but that's just my opinion).
It's also hard not to view the film through the prism of events occurring in contemporary US - and wonder who might step up, as King did, to lead the new generation in the struggle for civil rights.
All in all, a very worthy film about an incredibly important time in history.
