Review of Selma (2014) by Giovanna B — 19 Feb 2015
There is not a misstep in this entire picture! Had to honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy on the holiday dedicated to him. The Golden Globes gave Ava DuVernay and David Oyelowo nominations. It is a shame the Oscars didn't nominate more people involved in this film.
Oyelowo delivers King's powerful speeches well. He also shows King's human doubt and the film briefly explores King's infidelity to his wife played by the stunning and bright Carmen Ejogo.
The ensemble cast is multifaceted and this important period of history was a great one to portray on the screen. It is a more important lesson to listen to African American leadership, rather than denying it and trying to maintain white control over HIStory (the white male story).
It is surely not beyond reason to see that political red tape and maneuvering could have caused President Johnson to repeatedly delay speaking about legislation that activist Martin Luther King, Jr. wanted action on much earlier.
The marches King led definitely changed the nation and brought many people together, though there is still work to be done.
