Review of Selma (2014) by Eric A — 21 Feb 2015
A masterful rendition of history put to the screen. Once again history is hard to encapsulate into two hours. There are years of oppression to overcome...the dark years of the South do come back to haunt those who can remember.
It was not too long ago that Ferguson happened. Selma could easily be a lesson for events for today and assist in a great approach to make things better. Nothing is that easy though and this movie wants to tell its story.
David Oyelowo is very good as Martin Luther King...fiery in his speeches and humble in his introspection on what he faces. Carmen Ejogo also brings a subtle, thoughtful approach to her Coretta. We see fear and the love that extends to all who join their flock.
This could have easily been a historical pageant ...yet the director Ava DuVernays fights against this. She wins for the most part. Some of the scenes in the Oval office almost approach that typical approach.
It is interesting to note that often Oyelowo would be shown in silhouette with back lighting. Perhaps this is because he is not completely identical to King...yet he certainly does embody his heart and soul.
