Review of Selma (2014) by Reini U — 03 Mar 2015
Not so interesting in the historic context because so much more is missing. George Wallace standoff with the government before (hell this was almost civil war, JFK had to send the national guard!) Dr. Kings previous rallies and speeches, his murder, LBJ's background in opposition to JFK, ... Selma is one of the three major events in the fight for civil rights.
But what made it so disturbing is that the very same issues are still prevalent.
Only minor issues changed. There's still widespread injustice and racism. Dr. King thought that the voting right will get blacks into juries and racial injustice will disappear. It did not. Juries are profiled, as voters were profiled before. Judges, police and government can still do what they want, and will not be held accountable.
There are still such demagogic protests necessary. It's a shame. But you get to understand the game. Which is a major accomplishment for this movie.
