Review of Selma (2014) by Tarloke J — 16 Mar 2015
This is an amazing movie and the fact that it was overlooked by the academy for the main actor awards is a crime.
David Oyelowo plays Dr King who was one of the people at the forefront of the civil rights movement. Many may have thought at the time why Selma? He decides to choose this location for a protest march against the whites denying the blacks the right to vote, even though the law allows them to.
This felt real, from the beatings of those who were protesting along with the savagery they were handled with during these peaceful marches along the bridge. You see the story unfold mainly from the point of Dr King and those working with him.
Tom Wilkinson also excels as President Johnson who was weak as he didn't stand out but I guess he had a lot of flack from all sides to deal with. We also get to see the brief but chilling cameo from J Edgar Hoover.
An amazing movie and so important.
