Review of Selma (2014) by Cam O — 07 May 2015
Selma was far more powerful than what I was expecting, for it managed to resonate Kings fight for freedom with modern day problems such as racism and brutality. The talented cast, led by a phenomenal David Oyelowo, leads us through an emotionally and politically astute stand against racism.
The flawless direction from Ava DuVernay questions the sanity of the academy awards. 2 nominations? The Direction, Acting, Cinematography, Music, and Writing are all more than valid for this Years oscars.
its a film despite being unrecognized by academy members, a hard-hitting, phenomenally executed depiction of Martin Luther Kings march from Selma to Montgomery that doesn't glorify his death, but illuminates the importance of what he changed in history.
Luckily, David Oyelowo was able to connect with everyone in the theater, reaching out to many, projecting Martin Luther King as the powerful and thoughtful man he is. And they nominated Bradley Cooper for best actor over Oyelowo? ha, nice one.
