Review of Selma (2014) by Sally A — 12 May 2015
Outstanding motion picture nominated for two Oscars (best picture and best original song)! As critic Paul Chambers from Movie Chambers indicated: " A treasure trove of outstanding performances, brilliant writing and heartfelt direction.
" From beginning to end, a gripping, educational, moving film inspired by true events that took place during the epic showdown between the Alabama state troopers, police and black residents of Selma, Alabama as they attempted to march along the bridge to the courthouse in order to register to vote and obtain voting rights.
A piece of American history that was brilliantly told, depicting moments of doubt by Martin Luther King Jr. (amazing performance by David Oyelowo). Bravo to the cast and crew in particular Tom Wilkinson as President Johnson, Alessandro Nivola as John Doar (great Southern accent), and Carmen Ejogo as Coretta S.
King. An interesting bit of trivia- Selma's director is a woman (Ava DuVernay) and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) who oversees the Oscars nominations, made history in 2013 when for the first time elects a black president and only the third woman chosen to the post.
If you watched the Oscars this year (like I did) you will remember her giving a speech during the Oscars. Recommended!
