Review of Selma (2014) by Gordon H — 22 Feb 2016
A chronicle of Martin Luther King's campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965. The film stars actors David Oyelowo as King, Tom Wilkinson as President Lyndon B. Johnson, Tim Roth as George Wallace, Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King, and rapper and actor Common as James Bevel.
I was surprised by how much I loved this movie! I was familiar with the marches staged by King and his associates to secure equal voting rights, but being familiar with something and seeing it portrayed in dramatic fashion, as this powerful film does, are two very different things. Indeed, I found myself getting very emotional as I watched this great march take place. I'm so glad that Martin Luther King had his "Dream" and the courage to make it happen!
Selma received four Golden Globe Award nominations, including Best Motion Picture - Drama, Best Director, and Best Actor, and won for Best Original Song. It was also nominated for Best Picture and won Best Original Song at the 87th Academy Awards.
