Review of Selena (1997) by Matt D — 05 Aug 2018
An interesting depiction of the prominent Mexican-American female vocalist. I've viewed this picture fairly recently and I honestly had no initial issues with the film. Most of the time it was well-paced, well-acted, with a combination of gorgeous musical compositions.
Nevertheless, my second viewing changed my opinion from a great movie to a mediocre one at best. Jennifer Lopez essentially controlled this entire picture with her strong representation of the real Quintanilla-Pérez.
But, her solid depiction couldn't salvage the hysterically poor attempts at comedy and the soap opera vibe from Selena's relationship with the guitarist. Despite its massive technical flaws and hit/miss writing, this is something that I believe anyone fascinated with any Latin culture should view.
