Review of Seeking Justice (2011) by Tyson H — 18 Feb 2013
So this one has been slammed pretty hard and I think that's a little harsh.
Firstly, I'm a big Cage fan- I only watched this one because it's one of a small few of his films that I hadn't seen. I accept that he's far from perfect (very far) and has made some bad movie choices (very bad) and going by other reviews I expected this to be one of the worst.
I was pleasantly surprised to some extent though. In comparison to Next or Bangkok Dangerous, Cage's acting is pretty good in this one. I'm not so sure it's the generic run-of-the-mill performance others are describing it as. Sure it's nothing he hasn't done before and it's nothing close to his great performances but I think it's a little more than your autopilot monotone Cage at least.
The cast overall performed okay I thought, though they all took some time to heat up, Pierce in particular left it a little late. I liked the look of this film- pretty basic but hard-hitting action and a general murky atmosphere throughout. It felt fairly low-budget but not in a bad way, even though it probably wasn't.
This film reminded me quite a bit of another 2011 Cage film- "Trespass". The similarities are- a decent but not outstanding performance from Cage, a good supporting cast and, the deciding factor I'm afraid- A terrible, terrible script.
The script is the be all and end all of a film and it kills this one dead, it's the kind of thing you could write while you take a leak. It's cliché nonsense that expects the audience to put effort in to somehow make it good. For that reason this film couldn't possibly be seen as anything other than rotten but I feel, aside from the script, this wasn't a dismal failure- with a better script it could have been a perfectly acceptable action flick. Would never have amounted to more than that though.
