Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, or SAFFTEOTW to the Twitter generation, is a morbid comedy that manages to quite successfully straddle the darker and lighter sides of an impending apocalypse, for the most part.

It is more successful as a comedy than it is in the parts that it attempts to be something more profound. Steve Carell doesn't have the necessary range to compliment both sides of the coin, personally I'd rather have seen someone like Ewan McGregor in the lead role.

Also it is difficult to see this as little more than a comedy version of Melancholia, really why we are getting so morbid these days I don't quite know, perhaps we have become too cynical. SAFFTEOTW is heavily flawed and it isn't the film that it probably thinks it is but it's still a decent comedy despite its shortcomings.
