Review of Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012) by Andrew O — 12 Jan 2016
I love Steve Carell, I really do, but this wasn't a very good movie. The ending, especially, sucked. I do like the premise of the film, though. From a philosophical angle, it opens up questions about the meaningfulness of life in the face of the immanent end of the world, nihilism, love, friendship, happiness, romance, waiting, risking, and a host of other elements of human experience that are really notable.
Nietzsche once said, "In some remote corner of the universe, poured out and glittering in innumerable solar systems, there once was a star on which clever animals invented knowledge. That was the highest and most mendacious minute of 'world history'-yet only a minute.
After nature had drawn a few breaths the star grew cold, and the clever animals had to die." This movie takes place during the last three weeks of this bleak story. Aside from the uncomfortable ending scene, the significance is still unmistakable: even though life will end - very, very soon - it is still worth living together.
Life is an end in itself.
