Review of Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012) by George K — 15 Jul 2013
I, perhaps am one of the most critical judges of file and music. I typically judge movies based on whether or not I'd rewatch them and by how many times I'd do so. In the last 4 months I've seen this movie 4 times and enjoyed it each and every time. The music chosen, although not what I typically listen to, was perfect.
Writer/Director Lorene Scafaria crushed it. If you're one of those who needs ridiculous CGI effects with very few real moments, then this may not be your cup of tea. Don't be scared of the title, it has touching moments, but has an equal amount of amazing dialogue mixed with dark comedy.
Although, not your typical match up, Steve Carell and Keira Knightley made for amazing on screen chemistry. I was introduced to film by my mother who got us one of the first generation VCR's and purchased every film that was available at the time. What she taught me was that when a film invokes reaction in the viewer, something was done right. The first time I saw, "Vanilla Sky", I left the theatre with an uneasy, unidentifiable feeling. Only after I watched it again was I able to see the magic that was created, but that initial reaction was perfect. With that said, my first viewing of this film sparked several positive emotions and not once was my attention drawn elsewhere due to a lack of meaningful dialogue or content. I'm curious to see more of what writer/director Lorene Scafaria has to offer.
Cameos from long time actor Martin Sheen, comedian/actor T.J. Miller from such films as "She's Out of My League (2010)" and " How to Train Your Dragon (2010)" , long time actor William Petersen best known for his role in CSI and films such as, "To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)", "Manhunter (1986)", "Young Guns II (1990)" and "Fear (1996)", comedian/actress Nancy Carell (Steve Carell's wife) best known for her role in television show, "The Office", "SNL" (1995-1996), and "Bridesmaids (2011), comedian/actor Rob Corddry formerly of, "The Daily Show" and best known for his roles in, "Hot Tub Time Machine", "What Happens in Vegas (2008)", and "Warm Bodies (2013), Melanie Lynskey, Connie Britton, Derek Luke, Adam Brody, Rob Huebel and many more.
I would be remised not to mention the eclectic sound track comprised of great songs from amazing artists such as, "The Walker Brothers", "The Hollies", "INXS", "P.M. Dawn", "The Beach Boys", and many more. From watching this film I clearly realized the time and effort that was dedicated in making such a meaningful film.
