Review of Seeing Other People (2004) by Travis H — 05 Jan 2005
For once, I agree with Roger Ebert. Seeing Other People starts well, has some moments that seem to be leading to potential greatness, but then becomes cluttered and eventually can't quite get the steam to finish strongly. The film begins by almost immediately introducing the premise, of this engaged couple (played perfectly by Julianne Nicholson and Jay Mohr) that decides that they should sleep with other people until they get married in order to broaden their sexual horizons, and eventually become closer to each other. Of course, things begin to fall apart when casual sex turns into something more serious. Somewhere amongst that the movie itself becomes a little casual and plays itself out a little bit plainly to the end. Still, there is some great humor and both Mohr and Nicholson bring a soft, human touch to their characters, especially when onscreen together.
