Review of Seed of Chucky (2004) by Tim B — 17 Jul 2010

It took years after Bride before Don Mancini was given the greenlight to go through with Seed of Chucky. Was it worth the never-ending wait for another Chucky fix? Heck yes. First off, I'm amazed at how much the censors let past in this one.

There were so many creative and ultra-violent deaths. Fun times! The effects were also amazing in how the dolls seemed more alive than ever. Loved that they didn't go the CG way with them like everybody else seems to these days (too phony looking for me).

As with Bride, there were many funny moments and clever references to other movies. The screenplay was very well-written. The dialogue was smart and hilarious. The "film within the film" nature was a nice new direction for the series, and made way for some awesome moments (Britney Spears scene!).

Take that Hollywood! I loved that they gave each of the doll family members their own baggage which made way for some amusing moments. Chucky getting used to being a father, Tiffany trying to kick her murderous habits and Glen's gender issues all had me cracking up for their own reasons.

Don Manini does wonders in his directorial debut. He knows the characters better than anyone (having written every entry) and uses that with his style. The pacing was lightning fast, the camera angles cool and certain movements were awesome.

Jennifer Tilly was great as Jennifer Tilly and Tiffany. It was eerie to see both entities exchange words. Crazy! Brad Dourif, yet again is on top of his game. The man owns at this point. Billy Boyd was hilarious as the overly confused offspring.

Hannah Spearritt did what she had to do and was a cutie. John Waters has a small role and cracked me up. On the downside, though the doll's interaction was hilarious and good in its own right, it left a lot of potential action scenes out.

Especially on Chucky's part. I also longed for a bit more interation between the dolls and Hollywood in general (stars, locations). I liked what I got, I just craved more. Selfishness, I guess. There was also a couple of subplots that didn't really need to be there.

They brought nothing to the table in the movie's plot, especially when it came to Hannah Spearitt's character. Lastly, and this is just me bitching, I easily could've went without seeing Redman.

For poking fun at Hollywood so much, you'd think they'd be smarter than the latest tred at hiring rappers to act in their movies. His acting is also worth crap and he's playing himself! How does that happen? It could just be for my personal hatred of How High that I'm picking on him.

Regardless, this is still a great entry in the series. Keep in mind that it's a comedy with a lot of bloodshed. Once I got that down, I had a blast and hopefully you will too. Another entry instead of remake please! This series still has a lot to offer!
