Review of Seed of Chucky (2004) by Andrei C — 30 Mar 2013
Oh dear God, if you thought the series took a giant U-turn with Bride of Chucky then this movie will be your worst nightmare (but for all the wrong reasons).
Chucky could have been a real slasher villain, right up there with Michael Myers, Freddy and Jason; all the ingredients were certainly there - the original movie was scary, unique and had a subtle dark humor behind it. The sequel, even though it wasn't as great, still had its moments. It was Bride of Chucky that turned the series into a mockery, however, and Seed of Chucky takes everything that was wrong with its predecessor and brings it to new heights. Gone is the darkness of the first film! This one could pass for family entertainment these days and I have no idea what the target audience was supposed to be - fans of the original? But this Chucky has very little in common with the original. Comedy fans? There are far better comedies around; the humor in Seed of Chucky is outdated and cliched to say the least - packed with pop culture and movie references, corny mid-life crisis jokes and every romantic comedy cliche in the book. Long story short, if you're looking for horror, look elsewhere; if you're looking for comedy, look elsewhere; if you're looking for a thriller, look elsewhere.
