Review of Secrets & Lies (1996) by Sherry L — 14 Oct 2007
Very good british drama, about dysfunctional relationships and family bounds.
Hortence is a beautiful, successful and intelligent black optometrist, whose adoptive mother just recently has passed away. After a while, Hortence realise that now is the time for her to trace up her birth mother.
Hortence's birth mother Cynthia is a very poor white woman, who lives in a suburb of London, with her chainsmoking daughter who hates her guts. Her only friend is her brother who is not allowed to see his sister very often for his wife.
The scene when Cynthia sees her daughter for the first time, and gets a shock when realising that her daughter is black, is incredibly well acted.
And so is the dinner party scene, when all the secrets and lies are brought to the surface and it turns out that Cynthia is not the only one in the family having secrets.
Very good, well acted movie with many intrigues and good plot.
