Review of Secrets & Lies (1996) by Augustine H — 29 Dec 2009
Mike Leigh anatomizes this interesting yet depressing scrutiny of mankind bit by bit. It's natural, tranquil but explosive at the same kind. The barbecue scene tore apart all secrets and lies. We can easily observe the different class culture.
Yet we are also left to think if we have ever been in the similar abyss. Have we tried to cover our dark past? Have we ignored the needs of those who love us and taken their caring for granted? The cast is memorable, particularly for Brenda Blethyn, Timothy Spall and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
