Review of Secrets & Lies (1996) by Sean H — 22 Mar 2010
A friend of mine called this "one of those talking movies," and I don't think he meant it as a compliment. If he meant that this is one of those movies in which people talk in rooms, then yes, it is indeed a talking movie.
But I was impressed how wonderfully and comically the actors delivered this. Indeed Brenda Blethyn received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, and she was robbed by Frances McDormand in "Fargo," a role specifically written for her by her husband.
There are some gaps here (I really wanted to know the story behind Hortense's father), but the actors really helped this "talking movie" deliver a sympathetic punch to the shoulder.
