Review of Secretary (2002) by Barbara R — 02 Aug 2010
A decent Indie film on an odd premise, the main reason for the films success is undoubtedly the performance of its two leads. Maggie Gyllenhall is great as a young, curious woman entering into a bizarre world of behavior she progressively finds less unorthodox and more seductive.
She plays the part with enough of a heart that you never truly view her as creepy, and there's something even sweet about her obsession. And James Spader plays the deviant egomaniac perfectly, and is a good enough actor to even endow hiim with an admirable humanity.
The films biggest flaw is it runs too long; this would have likely worked better if it was a half hour shorter. Nevertheless it is a decent little independent that deserves praise for good acting and a risky premise.
