Review of Secretary (2002) by Trey I — 17 Dec 2009
Love this movie. Instead of merely focusing on the S&M elements, there is a fascinating layer of character study here. How does Lee operate in basic human society? How is Edward's extreme awkwardness especially in relation to his dominant personality have a rational side? Simple, both take their weird personalities and merge.
The acting is phenomenal. Maggie is much better than her brother at eliciting charm, quirk, and awkwardness all of the same. Without her as the lead and Spader as the boss, the movie becomes an exercise in quirk.
With them, it lets the strange humanity shine. And it's a mix of strange and fascinating the way Spader and Gyllenhaal play with each other.
