Review of Secretary (2002) by Tishka F — 06 May 2010
This is a unique movie that works because of Maggie Gyllenhaal's performance as "Lee" who is a disturbed but charming submissive. She has emotional issues and is a "cutter' where she likes to inflict pain on herself.
She takes a job as a secretary in a legal office, despite having no work experience at all. Her new boss "Mr Grey" is the wonderfully masochistic James Spader. There is genuine conflict in the character as he cares about her, and she realizes she gets off on his cruelty, which is more an act of love than just being cruel.
This film is strangely erotic, yet maintains a cuteness and oddness about it. Not a family film.
