Review of Secretary (2002) by Grant S — 25 Dec 2013
The dysfunctional and sadomasochistic relationship between a secretary and her boss. A rather exotic film that draws inspiration from an ultimate overused sexual metaphor between the secretary and her boss out of which it is Maggie Gyllenhaal, in her brave and quirky performance as the masochistic woman, that particularly shines.
What Shainberg suffers from is character development and a narrative worthy of its feature length, and that is also where the film shows a rather unremarkable lack of cleverness, a fact that opposes the intriguing and sexy wit that is on the contrary among the best elements of the film.
