James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhal...could there be two less-similar thesbians in Hollwood? Spader is lanky, shifty, and kind of creepy...Gyllenhal is spunky, natural and fun to watch. Put them together? In an erotic dark comedy? How does this even work? I don't know, nor do I care - it plays with so many "restricted" emotions in our lives that it just comes off as a bit of accidental genius.
These two should NOT be appealing together on screen...there should NOT be any chemistry between them...and yet they pull it off. At times disturbing, and at other times hilarious or even sexy, this was a strange movie, but welcome nonetheless.
