Review of Secretariat (2010) by John C — 19 Feb 2011
Randall Wallace's "Secretariat".
Penny Chenery took on the establishment of a male-dominated thoroughbred horse owners and the business of horse racing. She succeeded in breaking down those barriers and her story becomes the basis for the film, "Secretariat".
As Secretariat's owner, Chenery's story is a remarkable one. Secretariat would end up winning the first U.S. Triple Crown in 1973 - the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. Secretariat set new race track records in both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, which still stand today.
Diane Lane plays Penny Chenery in the film with conviction while John Malkovich is the flamboyant trainer, Lucien Laurin.
Director Randall Wallace, working on a screenplay written by Mike Rich based on the book by William Nack, feels like he is working under the constraints of Disney and the pressure to deliver a family oriented film. And that he does.
"Secretariat", in the end, would still provide enough inspiration even it its overall approach may be pedestrian.
