Review of Secretariat (2010) by Christian C — 20 Jul 2011
A good but unremarkable film about the owner of the greatest horse in racing history. The races are impressive in their faithful recreations, fully capturing the excitement Secretariat generated on the track. Lane gets to be stoic, Malkovich gets to be quirky, and Disney gets to make a quick buck.
The climactic Belmont Stakes is a thriller right up to the final turn, at which point the filmmakers set it to one of the worst soundtrack decisions in recent memory. "O Happy Day"? Really? Sure, underscoring with a glorious orchestral theme at the moment of triumph is a sports movie cliche, but at least it works.
