Review of Secretariat (2010) by Manon M — 23 Dec 2011
Very discreet for a Disney film. I admit, I hoped it would have been more flashy, nostalgic and inspirational. The film is family-friendly and has some truly strong moments, it is very enjoyable and guided by powerful performances, especially by Diane Lane. Still, it doesn't reach out as much as other family films like "Dolphin Tale", which is probably right now the qualitatively best family film on the market.
I don't blame it for holding back its potential emotions, but it is sad that the inspiration I hoped it would bring stays far behind... It has some cheesy moments tho, but probably thanks to its discreetness it doesn't literally drown in Kitsch. At the same time, this unobtrusiveness sacrifices the inspirational core of "Secretariat". Sadly.
The racing scenes tho are ingenious! Probably next to the acting performances the best thing in this film. Not a bad film and very nice too watch, but there's better stuff out there.
