Review of Secretariat (2010) by Barry N — 01 Aug 2011
Although I have enjoyed racing films in the past, I was never truly enthralled by as much as this one did. I loved watching the horse racing scenes. They were brilliantly directed and a lot of fun to watch.
Now, if you know your history, or if you have the slightest bit of common sense, you all ready know how this film is going to end, but just like Apollo 13, the film manages to draw suspense filled moments even though we all ready know the end. But it's those suspense filled moments, that actually make the ending so satisfying.
This film is also very well acted, well written, well directed, and it helps the film that this film is extremely accurate. The films flaws are heavily overshadowed by all the positive elements of this film. This isn't filmmaking at it's finest, but it's certainly an amazing piece of cinematic. It shows the filmmakers cared about the subject material, and what others would think of it. I understand that some artistic licenses were made to this film, but pick any film based on a true story and you'll find this is one of the more accurate ones out there.
The beggining drew me in and my attention didn't divert until the spirit-soaring ending. A great film that had me drawn in with interesting characters, and great horse racing scenes. Recomended.
