Review of Secret Window (2004) by Jonas S — 08 Aug 2010
I review this in comparison to my friend's review:
I think the best thing of David Koepp is that he can see anything he wants to see just in his head. His visualization then comes in the form of a screenplay that is the beginning of a film-making. The thing is, David Koepp knows well what he writes about and how he puts it on the screen. Comparing him to Orson Welles or Paul Thomas Anderson (they are my favorites when it comes to director-screenwriter profession), David Koepp made only a few hits, but I think they deserve the title of classic. Watch Stir of Echoes. The director knows how to scare people out of their seat just by adding up the tense between the characters. Watch Ghost Town. He knows how to make people laugh without having a typical gag run around his script. Man, Jurassic Park maybe wasn't the best film in 1993, but that was the momentum in my life when I found a desire to love cinema with all my heart.
And personally, I don't know how come people don't like Secret Window. Maybe they watched too many thriller, all too great they become blind to the real meaning of thriller genre. What is it in the Vertigo you don't find in Secret Window? The director's name, perhaps. Just as in the tradition of mystery/thriller genre, Secret Window plays its game all too well to become so interesting. I've never realized the best way to erase an evidence related to a murder crime until I saw the film. Maybe even Hitchcock never did, too.
