Review of Secret in Their Eyes (2015) by Sandra T — 28 Nov 2015
If you are the type that likes to ponder puzzles of the psyche and enjoy a film that keeps you asking questions and provides fodder for discussion after the film ends, then this film is for you. If you want to sit back, relax, and enjoy a series of "wow" moments, and expect a satisfying resolution in the end, then this not for you. There is no real satisfaction gained gained by victims at the "conclusion" of such an event, nor is there at the conclusion of this film. This film does not provide the emotional release that viewers typically desire. It is definitely more true to life in that respect and that is the problem--most people do not get out and go to the movies for true to life.
Having said that, the film is not lacking in emotional depth. The performances by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Julia Roberts were superb--those two are well matched in their ability to portray emotional depth.
There were some very thought provoking lines that I am still pondering, in addition to the primary question put forth by the writer. Submitted for your consideration is whether passion, in the form of love/guilt/revenge, is able to underwrite sustained rote behavior. Could they be two sides of the same coin?
The transitions from past to present are subtle and challenging, so you really have to be cognitively engaged--no sitting back in your chair and taking it easy on this one. Personally, I liked the challenging and thought provoking nature of this film. It is not one I will easily forget.
