Review of Secondhand Lions (2003) by Shane V — 23 Dec 2009
Taking a more sentimental look with my review of Secondhand Lions. Some people may think that an 8 is pretty high for such a movie, but I believe it deserves it. But that comes in the end. For now, on to the review!
Secondhand Lions tells the story of a young boy named Walter who is sent to live with his two unfriendly great uncles for the summer in the American 60's. His mother sends him with the objective of finding his uncles hidden fortune. Over the course of a few months, the three begin to bond, and Walter learns the secret of their pasts and how to be a man, while helping his uncles spend their money.
The star-studded cast of three features film legends Michael Cain & Robert Duvall, and the young Haley Joel Osment. All give excellent performances, except Osment often seems awkward speaking in the vernacular of the 60's. This tale of action, emotion, and fantasy blends well together and makes the story run together. Most of the focus, comedy, and heart come from the mannerisms of Hub & Garth (Cain & Duvall). The dialogue is super-saturated with heart while the screenplay keeps the action running flawlessly. The few amount of characters makes it easy to establish excellent back-stories & plot points. A fine movie with a slightly muddled message but great morals, Secondhand Lions earns 8 shells out of 10.
