Review of Secondhand Lions (2003) by Ted R — 07 Apr 2011
This is a great family film, but doesn't come off too corny. One of my favorite films. Duvall, as always, takes this film to another level and beyond just a the "Disney" feel good dramedy.
Two aspects that I love about this film. One, Hub's character who loved just one woman passionately even if it brought him heartache in his elder years. The second is Hub's speech to the young Walter about belief in something that may or may not be true is important.
We learn later that the tales his uncle told Walter were true. This is a bit like "Big Fish." The movie is has a lot of great moments. Also, the Sedwick character...Mae...Walter's Mom, is a sadly all to true a character for some of my friends I grew up with and a reality in this world.
She does the right thing and lets the uncle's raise him. Sadly, more parents don't do this. A good all around movie that I own and watch over and over. Side note. I agree that Caine was a bit miscast.
..he's too British (not Texan)..and Haley Joel wasn't too great, but over all they do well and the movie does great despite that weakness.
