Review of Secondhand Lions (2003) by Peter G — 14 Jan 2013
They said it was schmaltzy? Seriously? This is one of the best movies of the past ten years. The schmaltz is just the surface layer, the lightweight whipped cream on top of a delectable hot fudge sundae of a movie. Dig deeper and you'll find excellent casting, nuanced performances from Duvall and Caine, and a script that deftly walks a fine line between hoakum and inspiration.
If you think it's just a movie about a kid who has to spend a summer with his eccentric uncles, you're missing a lot. Give it another look.
