Review of Secondhand Lions (2003) by Kayla P — 14 Jul 2008
A rather enjoyable movie and a coming-of-age tale of a teenage boy named Walter (Haley Jo Osment) who comes to live with his two great-uncles (Michael Caine and Robert Duvall) on their farm. These two old men are hilariously offbeat at times and they at first prove to be something of an enigma to their great-nephew.
With rumours of there being an endless supply of money in their possession because they were mafia hitmen and/or bank robbers, Walter is drawn into their own stories of when they were young; rescuing a kidnapped princess in a faraway land, fighting bandits and slave traders, fighting through both world wars, and more.
Secondhand Lions doesn't fully answer each question about their identities but this is not the point of the movie. It's about Walter's transformation from an insecure adolescent to a confident young man and his aging uncles who will go to great lengths in order to keep the natural forces of time at bay.
Watch this one on a rainy day and/or when you're in the mood for a fun and light-hearted film.
