Review of Searching for Sugar Man (2012) by Andrew T — 27 Oct 2012
Sometimes it takes decades to discover lost treasures. In the late 60s a second generation Mexican folk singer played local bars and unluckily was discovered by record producers. Although very talented for whatever reason his two albums were dramatic failures in this country and he was fired by his label.
A half a world away, however, those same albums and those same songs became the sound of a enlightened generation. Songs like "I Wonder"and "The Establishment Blues" turned into anthems against the government of apartheid.
Rumors of the singer's unfortunate demise increased his legend in this developing country. This documentary explores both the history and the historic concert that came about as a result of tiresome research and devotion.
