A good documentary doesn't have to be about an important topic. A few years ago my favorite documentary was about a bunch of Donkey King players. It's all about the story. If you have a great story and a good film maker you can make a great documentary.
This is a decent story that could have easily been told in a 20 minute segment of 60 minutes. It's a nice underdog story, but it wasn't that compelling to me. I'm surprised its the front runner for the Documentary Oscar.
I hope How to Survive a Plague spoils it's win.
